Meanwhile, Michael Hochwalt impressed in the 400 individual medley, as he went 4:11.46 to move into a tie for the 10th-fastest American in the history of the event.

The final session of prelims will feature men’s and women’s action in the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 50 backstroke. The 50 backstroke is expected to include Hunter Armstrong, who is chasing a bid to next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

The final event of prelims saw Aiden Hayes notch the fastest time in the 50 backstroke, as he was the sole performer under 25 seconds. Hayes went 24.86 and was followed by a 25.03 from Grant Bochenski. Americans Justin Ress and Hunter Armstrong, medalists in the event at past World Championships, tied for the third seed in 25.27.
