The New York Giants quarterbacks room has plenty of NFL veteran experience inside it for rookie Jaxson Dart to learn from, but there is another standout signal caller the former Ole Miss star is leaning on.
Buffalo Bills star and reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen has been having his phone blow up by Dart as the two have formed a bond since the latter was drafted by the Giants in April. There is a logical connection between the two quarterbacks, too, which helped the relationship feel organic.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll was the Bills offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, which included Allen’s rookie season. So Dart naturally reached out to see what the seven-year NFL veteran could offer up.
“I talked to Josh, like, a few days after I got drafted,” Dart said on Thursday. “He’s been somebody that I really looked up to since coming here. Just watching a ton of his tape and how he was able to operate coach Dab’s system. It’s going to kind of be a surreal feeling to be on the same field with him.”
Dart will make his NFL preseason debut on Saturday when the Giants travel to Orchard Park to take on the Bills for both team’s first preseason game of 2025. Kickoff is set for Noon CT and will air on NFL Network.
How much Dart sees the field on Saturday is something Daboll would not divulge when he announced earlier this week the rookie would get some playing time.
“The biggest thing is we talked about leadership,” Dart added. “That was kind of like his main thing. Trying to be the best teammate for the guys around me because the quarterback, you got to raise the standards of everybody.
“Schematics, what shows up on (Daboll’s) record is him being able to coach many different quarterbacks who have different skill sets and molding offenses around what they’re good at. So, just hone in on kind of the key details of coach Dab’s offense and really trust it.”
Looking at how Daboll treated Allen in his preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers in 2018 could give an idea of what to expect from Dart this weekend. Allen attempted 19 passes, completing nine of them for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Dart is in a room with NFL veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston along with two-year player Tommy DeVito. How much all of the Giants quarterbacks will play on Saturday, and all of preseason, is unknown.
