The Indiana Fever were hit with some devastating injury news amidst a mid-summer climb up the WNBA leaderboard.
A new contagion has unfortunately struck the Indiana Fever.
Already missing face of the WNBA Caitlin Clark indefinitely, the Fever announced on Friday that Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald will miss the rest of the 2025 season after enduring injuries during Thursday’s blowout loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
Colson, the veteran fan favorite working through her first year in Indianapolis, endured a left ACL tear during the first quarter of the 95-60 defeat, the latter of back-to-back losses after a Clark-less five-game winning streak.
“I think it affects us emotionally, because nobody wants to see a teammate go down like that,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said in the aftermath, per Ballislife’s Aya Abdeen. “On the floor, that’s another point guard, a primary ball handler, someone who is a big part of our rotation on both ends of the floor.”
Averaging 2.4 points and 2.0 assists in just over 13 minutes a game, Colson has been a reliable and well-liked veteran presence, serving as a locker room leader as the Fever (17-14) attempt to climb further upon the WNBA leaderboard. Entering Friday night play, Indiana places fifth on the WNBA leaderboard but is only two games ahead of Los Angeles, the first team out.
“Syd is still the heartbeat of our team, she’s going to be okay,” Cunningham, Thursday’s leading scorer with 18 points, said, per Abdeen. “Our team is going to be okay and again, it’s just another hurdle that we’re going to have to get over.”
The depleted Fever hosts a primetime Saturday night game against the Chicago Sky (8 p.m. ET, CBS) and will have only nine players available to partake. WNBA roster rules mandate that they can only sign a hardship contract after Saturday’s game. Following Saturday’s game, they’ll face the Dallas Wings on Tuesday.
