NASCAR Xfinity driver has collarbone surgery

by

NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch had surgery this week to repair a broken collarbone suffered in a fall while celebrating a win last weekend, he said on social media on Aug. 12.

Zilisch, 19, landed on his shoulder and side after slipping off his race-winning car in victory lane on Aug. 9 after claiming the Mission 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen.

Zilisch was released from a local hospital later in the day after CT scans were clean, though he did miss the next day’s Cup Series race that he was entered into driving in a Trackhouse Racing part-time entry.

He has kept a positive mindset on social media in the last few days while making fun of himself, too.

The JR Motorsports driver has not announced his near-future plans in returning to driving. The Xfinity Series is off this week and returns on Aug. 22 at Daytona. The Xfinity Series playoffs begin on Sept. 12 at Bristol. Zilisch would have to request for a playoff waiver should he miss a race.

Zilisch currently holds a seven-point lead over Justin Allgaier for the regular-season points lead; the regular-season points champion earns 15 playoff points.

Zilisch has won six Xfinity Series races this season, including four of the last five.
