Stop me when you’ve heard this before.
“Aagh… I just can’t swing it like I used to. My back, my hips …. everything HURTS”
Sound like you? Despite my mere 27 years on earth, I, too, am susceptible to the aches and pains of golf. Between swinging clubs, shooting hoops and wrangling a toddler, prioritizing my recovery has become a new hobby of sorts for me.
Like me, taking the proper steps to allow your body to recover is a surefire way to play better golf. On the flip side, not giving your body the rest and recovery it deserves can be detrimental to your game.
Here’s what’s trendy in recovery right now.
1. Massage Guns
jQuery( document ).ready( function( $ ) {
var slides = $( ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3 .mgs-gallery-images .mgs-gallery-image’ ).length;
if ( slides 6 ) {
slides = 6;
}
$( ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3 .mgs-gallery-images’ ).slick( {
slidesToShow: 1,
slidesToScroll: 1,
fade: true,
prevArrow: ‘‘,
nextArrow: ‘ ‘,
asNavFor: ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3 .mgs-gallery-thumbs’,
swipe: false,
mobileFirst: true,
} );
$( ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3 .mgs-gallery-thumbs’ ).slick( {
slidesToShow: ( slides – 1 ), //less than number of slides, so it always shows infinite scroll (bugfix)
slidesToScroll: 1,
arrows: false,
asNavFor: ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3 .mgs-gallery-images’,
centerMode: true,
focusOnSelect: true,
infinite: true,
mobileFirst: true,
responsive: [
{
breakpoint: 1023,
settings: {
slidesToShow: 3,
},
}, {
breakpoint: 600,
settings: {
slidesToShow: 1,
},
},
],
} );
$( ‘#mgs_gallery_689bce45a2ba3’ ).magnificPopup( {
delegate: ‘.mgs-gallery-trigger’,
type: ‘image’,
gallery: {
enabled: true,
arrowMarkup: ‘‘,
},
} );
} );
Of course, this is the one you’ve probably heard of. You may even have one. But a good massage gun goes a long way for both warm-up pre-round and recovery post-round. I really love Hyperice here, but there are a ton of other brands out there to check out as well.
2. Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is another one of those trendy recovery tools that may provide some benefit. I’m no scientist, and I haven’t had extensive experience with it, but brands like Kineon are making it more affordable and easier to do from your home. Those with more experience in red light therapy say that it promotes muscle recovery and reduces inflammation.
3. Saunas (and Cold Plunges)

This is another big one. Maybe you’ve got one at the local gym or rec center. In any case, both saunas and cold plunges have become a huge part of active recovery. And while it’s probably most economical to find one locally, if you are on the hunt, you can buy a personal sauna from somewhere like Sisu, though it’ll run you a few grand.
What works for you?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Did any of the above work for you? What have you found that helps in your recovery after a long, grueling round of golf?
