Sam Querrey wasn't impressed with Naomi Osaka's post-Montreal speech as the 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist criticized the Japanese on the latest episode of his podcast by suggesting that she should "act like an adult" in certain situations.
As everyone knows by now, Osaka spoke for only a couple of seconds after losing the Montreal final and didn't congratulate or acknowledge Victoria Mboko's win. Later, the former world No. 1 said that she "completely forgot" to congratulate Mboko. Then, the Japanese issued a Threads post, where she apologized and congratulated the 18-year-old. In the same post, she defended herself by saying that she was in "a daze" and didn't want to say something she'd regret later.
Querrey, who hosts the Nothing Major Show with John Isner, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson, decided to address it on the podcast.
Querrey: It drives me nuts… Can Osaka not just act like an adult for five minutes?
“Can Osaka not just act like an adult for five minutes? Just give a nice speech, fake it for a minute and then move on to the locker room. It drives me nuts. She is also going to make $30 million, you can’t just shy away from that. Give a decent speech, congratulate your opponent," the former American tennis star said on the Nothing Major Show.
After criticizing Osaka, Querrey went on to applaud the Japanese for making her first WTA 1000 final since 2022. Also, he predicted that the 2018 and 2020 US Open winner could possibly make some noise at Flushing Meadows this year.
“But having said that, great week for Osaka. She hasn’t been playing great there has been little signs here and there but to make a final, she can go to the US Open now and make a run to the semis, finals or maybe win it," the former world No. 11 added.
Osaka skipped Cincinnati after Montreal so she should arrive in New York well rested.
