On Wednesday, Longhorns women’s basketball got to shine on the national stage. The Longhorns took on Puerto Rico in their first game of the Globl Jam. Fresh off one of their best seasons in recent memory, Texas dominated from start to finish in an impressive win.
The Longhorns were led by Justice Carlton, who set the tone offensively with 18 points. She was a force on the board with 11 rebounds as Puerto Rico was overwhelmed by the Longhorns’ offense. She also got some help from Ashton Judd, who made four three-pointers and had 15 points. While Texas thrived from beyond the arc, they were unstoppable close to the basket. They outrebounded Puerto Rico 60-37. That helped Texas go on a 20-0 run in the second quarter and build a lead they would never relinquish. Although the Longhorns have been out of action for a few months, they did not look like they missed a beat on Wednesday night.
One of the most impressive things about the Longhorns’ win was the chemistry the new faces showed. In the first quarter, 14 of the team’s 21 points came from players who weren’t on the roster last season. At one point, that group scored 17 straight points. That is a very encouraging sign, with the start of the college basketball season still months away.

After a productive start to the tournament, Texas will be back in action on Thursday night against Team Canada. So far, they are 0-1 in the tournament and will be highly motivated to get into the win column. If Texas can force turnovers and excel on the boards, they should be able to remain undefeated.
The Longhorns will have a day off after facing Canada before taking on Brazil on Saturday. If they can continue their winning ways, Texas will earn a spot in the women’s final, which is set for Sunday night.
