Kansas Adds Mary Woods-Lopez to Coaching Staff
The University of Kansas on Tuesday announced the hiring of Mary Woods-Lopez as an assistant coach for the women’s swimming program.
Woods-Lopez spent the last six seasons at Saint Louis University in a variety of capacities. She started as a graduate assistant for the men’s and women’s teams for two years, then one as an assistant coach before taking over as the head coach in June 2023.
Woods-Lopez focused on freestyle groups, from sprint to distance. The women’s team posted the highest GPA (3.86) among Division I programs in the spring 2024 semester, with the men ranking seventh in the nation in the fall of 2024.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mary to our staff,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said in a university statement. “She accomplished so much as a head coach at Saint Louis University, and we are confident she will make a tremendous impact on our program. Mary is a complete coach who will elevate everyone around her.”
Woods-Lopez is a native of Carmel, Indiana. She swam for the town’s powerhouse high school and swim clubs before graduating from 2019 from DePauw University. She specialized in breaststroke and butterfly there, serving as a team captain. She set the program record in the 100 individual medley and on several relays. She earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and psychology.
