D-Von Dudley has finally cleared up the misunderstandings that people had about his relationship with Stephanie McMahon following his remarks a few years ago.
While speaking to Duke Loves Rasslin, D-Von Dudley was asked if he was trying to flirt when he once said Stephanie McMahon was a beautiful woman, which many people made a big deal about.
Dudley said the problem was the way he worded it. Instead of saying he admired her, he accidentally said he was infatuated with Stephanie McMahon. He explained that those two words mean very different things. He wasn’t paying close attention when he spoke, and it came out wrong.
What he really meant was that he admired her for everything she had been through in the wrestling business. She grew up around wrestling and experienced the Andre and Hogan era, the Bret and Shawn era, the Rock and Austin era, and the Attitude Era. He was just trying to show respect for how smart and experienced she was.
“Yeah, I know. I see that. No, but you know, the wording was messed up during that time. And instead of saying I admired, I said I was infatuated with her. And of course, infatuation and admire are two different meanings, two different definitions. But again, it was one of those things where I was talking and not really paying attention to what I was saying. And I used the word infatuated. Uh, but I was only trying to say that, you know, I admired her a lot for what she had been through coming up. Look, she grew up in this business. She knew, you know, the Andre and Hogan era. She knew the Bret and Shawn era. And of course, she knew the, um, the Rock and Austin era. She knew the Attitude Era. So, I was basically putting over how smart she was in the business.”
However, Dudley said people twisted it into saying he had a crush on her, claiming that Triple H should “watch out.” D-Von said that made no sense, because Stephanie and Triple H are completely in love with each other, and no one was trying to interfere with that.
Dudley said some people, even wrestlers he worked with, tried to make something out of it. He made it clear publicly that they were wrong and could “go f*** off” because they knew the truth. He never meant it in that way, but the story still spread.
At the time, he was at home recovering from back surgery and was actually glad he didn’t have to go into work, since he could imagine how much worse the talk would have been in meetings.
“Then it got turned around, and they said that, ‘Oh, well, D-Von has a crush. Watch out, Triple H.’ No, don’t watch out. Watch out for what? You know, that woman is madly in love with her husband, and her husband’s madly in love with her.
Ain’t nobody trying to disrupt that. Ain’t nobody trying to start no controversy. So, you know, all of those knuckleheads that tried to run with that. And there were people that I was in the ring with that tried to do a thing on that, too. And I made it public known they can go f*** off, because you know damn well that wasn’t the case.
And I didn’t mean it that way, but people ran with it, and it was what it was. And at the time, I was home recovering from the back surgery. So, I was like, ‘Thank God I didn’t have to go into work and go into those meetings.’”
This all stems from D-Von Dudley stating that he was infatuated with Stephanie McMahon a few years ago and added that he would have loved to have dated McMahon.
“I would have loved to have dated Stephanie McMahon. I am infatuated with Stephanie. I think she is beautiful inside and out, is funny, charismatic. She is everything that I would think that a woman should be if I wasn’t, if I wasn’t married.”
For D-Von, it was simply a slip of the tongue that spiraled into an unnecessary controversy. His intention was always to praise Stephanie McMahon, and fans are glad that he finally cleared up this misunderstanding.
Did fans and wrestlers blow D-Von Dudley’s words out of proportion, or should he have chosen his phrasing more carefully in the first place? Sound off in the comments.
