LIV Golf Indianapolis brought a lot of excitement for golf fans who were anxiously waiting to see who would win this year's edition. All attention was focused on Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann.
Although the Chilean golfer had as many as 5 victories this season, while Jon Rahm did not achieve a single victory, the Spanish golfer ultimately lifted the trophy and took home his second consecutive title in the overall standings of the LIV Golf Individual Championship.
Consistency seems to be valued more than winning individual trophies in this tournament.
The public is somewhat confused by this format of the Saudi-backed Tour, wondering if this is really a format that ensures fair competition.
The LIV Golf Indianapolis winner was Sebastian Muñoz at 22 under par, while Jon Rahm finished second at 22 under, but lost in a playoff.
In fourth place was Joaquín Niemann with 17 under par, which was not enough for the title.
The Chilean golfer shared his emotions after the tournament ended, aware that Jon Rahm is a quality golfer who has been in good form recently.
“Yeah, it was quite a show by Jon. I obviously played with him today, and I knew it was going to be a good battle. It was going to be a long day. I knew I needed to play well. I knew Jon was playing amazing golf lately,” Niemann said, as quoted by The Golfing Gazette.
Frustrations at their peak
Although Niemann didn't want to show all his frustration, it was clear that the Chilean golfer was disappointed with the outcome. When you dominate so many tournaments and win trophies, and end up falling short of the overall title, it's hard to be satisfied.
Niemann, however, wants to stay positive, hoping that next season can look different for him.
“We all know how good of a player he is, and yeah, he played amazing. I feel like he didn’t miss many shots, made a lot of putts, left his ball close to the hole pretty much every time.
I played good. I started playing my best golf on the back nine, which I’m proud of it, but at the end of the day, the putts didn’t drop, and it wasn’t enough. Yeah, it’s kind of hard to swallow, like you said. But at the end of the day, I think it is what it is. I feel like it’s going to put something inside me to kind of work harder and try to be in this situation again next year and make it different.”-he concluded.
