Fever Coach Stephanie White Sends Urgent Message as Playoff Race Heats Up originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The playoff chase is heating up in the WNBA at this point in the season. For the Indiana Fever, it appears that it’s going to be a battle to the end as they look to secure their spot in the postseason with just a quarter of the regular season left to play.
The Fever entered Friday’s matchup against the Washington Mystics with an 18-15 record and sixth in the WNBA. Indiana remains inside the playoff picture at the moment, but a string of losses could very well change its fate, especially with Caitlin Clark still without a timetable for her return from injury.
Fever head coach Stephanie White has sounded the alarm for her team. At this point, the veteran shot-caller wants to make sure that her players keep their eyes on the prize.
“Every game at this point in the year, with where we are, there’s got to be a sense of urgency,” White said on Friday ahead of the Mystics game. “You don’t want to put yourself in a position where you’re depending on other people (and) you’re hoping other people are going to help you position yourself in the playoffs.
“We talk about it. We also don’t want to trip on anything behind us. You can’t look too far forward. So, super important for us to stay locked into the moment.”

As White indicated in her statement, it’s essential for the Fever to focus on the things they can control, which is winning their games. There are so many external factors that will determine the playoff race, and the Fever have to make good on their end of the bargain.
