Kentucky is already taking some early looks at the 2028 class. Kam Mercer is a name now on UK’s radar.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard from Overtime Elite (Atlanta, GA) has been in contact with the Kentucky staff, sources tell KSR+. College coaches can’t reach out directly to 2028 prospects until June 15, but the staff has been in contact with Mercer’s agency, EZ Sports Group.
Kentucky has been in contact with only two 2028 prospects so far. In addition to Mercer, the staff also talked to 2028 forward Shalen Sheppard during the Nike EYBL session in Memphis in May.
Mercer was one of only a handful of 2028 players invited to the USA Basketball Junior National Team October Minicamp. He told On3 it was “a great experience.”
“I’ve been waiting on that, wishing on that invite since like the third grade,” he said. “So when my dad got the call, I was in the car with him, and he put it on speakerphone. It was one of the best experiences I could ever ask for.”
Kam Mercer’s Game
Kam Mercer, a 6-foot-5 guard from Overtime Elite (Atlanta) played with Team USA during the 2025 FIBA U16 AmeriCup. He helped lead Team USA to a gold medal after averaging 5.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game in six games off the bench.
Rivals has not released its 2028 rankings yet, but Mercer is ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect in ESPN’s rankings. ESPN ranks Mercer as the No. 3 point guard and the No. 2 player from the state of Georgia.
Mercer already holds offers from the likes of Xavier, Cincinnati, Ohio State, and Missouri, among others. He’s receiving interest from schools such as Duke.
“I would say that I’m a three-level scorer,” Mercer told On3. “But I can also play make and play defense as well. I watch a lot of Dylan Harper, and I would say that I want to take a little bit from D’Angelo Russell because of his pace. I would so those are the main two that I’m watching right now, they’re both left-handed bigger guards who play at their own pace and never really get sped up.”
