NEW YORK—Arthur Fils is out of the US Open main draw.

The 21-year-old Frenchman sustained a stress fracture in his back at Roland Garros that knocked him out of grass-court season. Fils announced on Instagram a “warning sign” he felt during his comeback match at the Canadian Open prompted his US Open withdrawal.

“After an injury that had kept me away from the courts, a warning sign felt during my comeback—first in Toronto and then in Cincinnati—led me to make the difficult but reasonable decision to withdraw from the US Open,” Fils said in a statement on Instagram Stories. “This decision was made to allow for a full recovery. I’m working hard every day with my team to come back strong and be ready for the end of the season.”

Fils made a brief comeback in Toronto where he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in his opener before bowing to Jiri Lehecka in round two. Fils and Toronto singles champion Ben Shelton reached the doubles quarterfinals before conceding a walkover.

World No. 20 Fils withdrew from the Flushing Meadows main draw a day after compatriot and Cincinnati semifinalist Terence Atmane pulled out of the US Open qualifying draw.
