Taylor Trammell leaves game in first inning with injury

by

DETROIT — Astros center fielder had to be carted off the field in the first inning of Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park after crashing into the wall.

Trammell raced back to try to catch a fly ball off the bat of Tigers designated hitter Dillon Dingler, but missed the ball and hit the wall awkwardly as he fell to his knees. Trammell struggled to get up and appeared to be in immense pain when he initially tried to walk off the field. A cart was eventually summoned to the field.

Rookie Jacob Melton took Trammell’s spot in center field.

Trammell’s availability for Wednesday’s game was in question after he fell flat on his back in the ninth inning of Tuesday’s loss while catching a ball in foul territory in left field. Trammell was able to stay in the game.

The injury to Trammell was part of a disastrous first inning for the Astros. Starting pitcher Framber Valdez needed 29 pitches to record an out and gave up six runs on four hits, three walks and two wild pitches in the frame. Houston began the game having been shut out in three consecutive games.
