NASCAR podcast: Previewing the Coke Zero Sugar 400 race at Daytona

NASCAR has officially released its 2026 Cup Series schedule. Some of the biggest moves were already known or strongly rumored — such as the street race in San Diego and the return of Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet to replace the Chicago Street Race.
But Wednesday’s full schedule release still included some new twists, if not new tracks. North Wilkesboro, one of NASCAR’s original playgrounds in the late-1940s, will give up the All-Star Weekend but return as a points-paying, regular-season event in mid-summer.
Simultaneous to that move, the All-Star Weekend moves to Dover Motor Speedway in mid-May. The 1-mile, concrete Delaware track has been a Cup Series stop since 1969 and for 50 of those years was host to two Cup races a year. Without lights at Dover, the All-Star Race will run in the afternoon.
Like downtown Chicago’s street circuit, the Mexico City race, which debuted this season, is off the 2026 schedule but could return in 2027. Losing those two road/street races and adding San Diego means the Cup schedule will shrink its road-course fare from six to five next year.
The year will again start Feb. 1 with the Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The regular season will begin two weeks later with the Daytona 500 and again end at Daytona with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 in late August.
The playoffs will again start at Darlington but next year will return to Florida for the finale at Homestead, instead of Phoenix, whose second date remains a playoff race. The season finale is slated to begin a rotation of warm-weather sites next fall.
The Xfinity and Truck Series schedules were announced a day earlier, and the biggest news from that dual release was the Truck Series addition of a street race in St. Petersburg, as part of IndyCar’s season-opening weekend. And get ready to lose “Xfinity” from your NASCAR vocabulary. The telecommunications company is being replaced by O’Reilly Auto Parts as series sponsor.
The next big scheduling news might feature changes to the structure of the 10-race playoffs. There has been a strong push to ditch the winner-take-all nature of the season finale, where the top four racers battle each other, with the highest finisher among the four winning the championship.
