Former Penn State QB competing for starting job with SEC school

A former Penn State player will see his competition for a starting job linger into the start of the 2025 season with his new school. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz has reportedly confirmed a quarterback competition will not be decided before the first game of the season and that former Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula will get a chance to compete for the job when the season opens for the Tigers next week.

Missouri will host Central Arkansas for a Thursday night season opener on Aug. 28. This is the kind of game that is well-suited for a program to carry out a quarterback competition when the season begins, although one would suspect Drinkwitz would like to have a firm answer on his starting quarterback before a Week 2 matchup against long-time rival Kansas.

Pribula will be competing for the job with Sam Horn, who is coming off an injury from last season.

“I informed the team this afternoon that both quarterbacks will play in the first game,” Drinkwitz said in a statement, according to a report from ESPN. “I want to see them in a game-day situation to make a final determination.”

Pribula spent the last two seasons at Penn State serving as a top backup option to starter Drew Allar. Pribula was inserted into the offense at times to mix things up with a different look and set of plays by Penn State, leading to 571 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons.

Pribula opted to enter the transfer portal and, unfortunately, had to leave the team as Penn State’s College Football Playoff run was about to get underway. Pribula was expected to get a chance to compete for the starting job at Missouri, whereas he would have continued to be a top alternative to Allar in Happy Valley. Pribula decided to transfer before Allar made it official that he intended to return to the Nittany Lions this season.
