LSU football awarded No. 18 for the 2025 season. The number will be worn by quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
LSU awards the No. 18 jersey each year to a player who represents what it means to be a Tiger. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, this is how head coach Brian Kelly described it when awarding the number last year.
“Throughout the last 25 years the number 18 has been passed down to a player who brings all those traits of a great teammate. Somebody who has given himself up for the team. A guy you can count on, a guy you want next to you when adversity hits, a guy that’s going to be there when you need him. That’s number 18.”
Nussmeier is the first LSU quarterback to receive No. 18 since Matt Mauck. LSU’s No. 18 tradition started with Mauck as the QB led LSU to a national title and led the SEC in completion percentage and passer rating.

LSU players and coaches have praised Nussmeier for his leadership skills throughout his entire LSU career, but those statements have been more pronounced this offseason. Nussmeier is a fifth-year passer who waited his turn, backing up Heisman-winning QB Jayden Daniels.
Nussmeier would have been an attractive name had he entered the portal, yet he decided to remain at LSU.
Nussmeier impressed in his first year as the full-time starter in 2024. Now, he enters 2025 as a Heisman candidate.
