GUNTHER may be in some hot water.
At SummerSlam 2025, GUNTHER lost the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk. Punk’s reign was brief, as Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and won the title. That is only the beginning of the story, but it could have caused some backstage heat for the Ring General.
During the match, GUNTHER bled, and the incident may have caused issues backstage. Billi Bhatti of the Dirty Sheets Wrestling Informer podcast discussed the matter as he said that GUNTHER wasn’t seen in the best light by some backstage after this. That blade job could also affect his future booking.
“It was hugely looking like it was going to be Gunther and I still think that will probably be the case. But… there is a little bit of heat on Gunther which you might see on the next episode of Unreal for Gunther blading incorrectly in the wrong place.”
“It caught the people backstage off guard, CM Punk off guard and the announcers off guard when Gunther came out and decided to not blade his nose in the end, wasn’t able to go through with it and just did a usual blade job to the head which was not the script.”
“I don’t think that hurts him significantly enough that they change a major plan. But don’t be surprised if it isn’t Gunther. And then we can hark back to that story as a reasoning.”
Bhatti suggested that while GUNTHER’s actions might not alter long-term plans, they could still have some impact on booking decisions moving forward. Only time will tell what they are able to do with him next, but GUNTHER is still certainly going to command a spotlight whenever he returns.
GUNTHER’s reigns as World Heavyweight Champion should never be diminished, no matter how he lost them. WWE Unreal may very well feature this little tidbit at SummerSlam, because they were around filming for the Netflix reality television series.
