Kirby Smart updates injuries to Georgia football O-lineman, punter Brett Thorson

Georgia football should have a chance to play its share of backups in its season opener against Marshall if things go the way most expect in a game the Bulldogs are favored by by more than five touchdowns.

One second-teamer on the offensive line appears unlikely to play in the game on Saturday Aug. 30.

Redshirt freshman Malachi Toliver is still working his way back from an ankle injury, coach Kirby Smart said.

Toliver, from Cartersville, is doing individual drills, running and snapping but has not taken part in team drills.

“We hope to get him back in those next week,” Smart said.

Georgia starts Drew Bobo at center and could turn to true freshman Cortez Smith or redshirt freshman Waltclaire Flynn, a UCF transfer, behind him if Toliver is out.

Smart also updated the status of punter Brett Thorson who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the SEC championship game.

The right-footed Thorson, a finalist last season for the Ray Guy Award for nation’s top punter, sustained damage to his ACL and MCL in his left knee.

“He punted in some punt situations today,” Smart said after practice Tuesday. “I don’t know yet that he’s going to be cleared, he’s cleared to kick. But there’s more to it then kicking. It’s just like the way he got injured, right? He’s got to get cleared to that point. I don’t know if we’re to that point, but he’s kicking in action.”

Redshirt freshman Drew Miller would punt if Thorson doesn’t go.
