TYR Summer Championships, Day Two Finals: Aaron Shackell Blasts 3:45.01 to Win 400 Feestyle; Bumps Luka Mijatovic for Pan Pacs Bid
The second night of the TYR Summer Championships is set up to produce some fast performances, with an Olympian duel in the 400-meter freestyle the most-aniticipated event on the schedule. Kieran Smith and Aaron Shackell will clash in the 400 free, where Smith is an Olympic bronze medalist from the 2020 Games in Tokyo, and Shackell was a finalist at last summer’s Games in Paris.
Alex Shackell is the heaadliner on the women’s side, as the 2024 Olympian advanced to the final of the 100 butterfly as the top seed. Shackell, an 18-year-old headed for Indiana University, went 57.69 during prelims to post the fastest time of the morning by more than a second.
Here is an event-by-event recap of the Day Two Finals:
Women’s 400 Freestyle
Australia’s Molly Walker moved into the lead early in the seventh lap and fought off American Bella Sims over the closing 100 meters. Walker posted a time of 4:07.22 and was followed by Sims in 4:07.34. Entering the last 100, Sims held a .01 edge on Walker, but Walker surged slightly in front just after the 300-meter mark and held on. Sims was coming off an appearance at the World Championships, where she raced in prelims for the United States’ silver medal 800 freestyle relay.
Placing third in 4:08.92 was Madi Mintenko, a Virginia recruit. Mintenko was the top seed in the final and cut time from her morning performance

Men’s 400 Freestyle
Going into attack mode from the start, 2024 Olympian Aaron Shackell delivered a wire-to-wire victory in the 400 freestyle that will have an impact on next summer. Fighting off a late charge by Kieran Smith, Shackell captured first place in 3:45.03, with Smith following in 3:45.73. Australian Matthew Galea was third in 3:48.15.
Shackell’s time was faster than the 3:45.71 from Luka Mijatovic at Nationals, which means Shackell moves into position to qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships next summer in Irvine. Shackell left nothing to chance, as he was at 53.66 through 100 meters and went through the midway point of the race in 1:50.42. While Shackell tired during the back half of the race, he dug deep in the closing laps and benefited from his early surge.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
Just a few minutes after her brother won the 400 freestyle and likely qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships, Alex Shackell cruised away from the field in the 100 butterfly. The top seed in the final, Shackell went 57.34 to prevail by more than a second over the Australian duo of Isabella Boyd and Bella Grant, who posted matching times of 58.63.
While the men’s selection process will only allow the top-two finishers in each event qualify for Pan Pacs, the women’s process is likely to include multiple third-ranked swimmers from the United States. That scenario has developed due to the number of multi-event qualifiers, and gives the younger Shackell a good chance of being named to the Pan Pacs squad.
