ACC Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Anna Moesch Goes 1:41.67 in 200 free
All eyes in the women’s 200 freestyle at the ACC Championships will be on Anna Moesch. Given the other top seeds that opted for other races and Moesch’s proximity to a hallowed round number, Moesch has the potential to do something special.
The Virginia sophomore set herself up for that Thursday morning by leading the way in prelims with a time of 1:41.67. She’s more than a second clear of the field, in a race where her seed time of 1:40.25 was already more than 1.5 seconds up on the field.

Women’s 400 individual medley
Virginia, Stanford, Cal – that’s the A final. Katie Grimes leads the way in 4:03.18, but she’s got lots of company. That includes from teammates Aimee Canny in third, Leah Hayes in fifth and Sophia Umstead in seventh.
The top seed entering the meet and the only woman to break four minutes this year, Stanford’s Caroline Bricker, went 4:05.81 for fourth. She was behind teammate Lucy Bell, who was second in 4:05.51. Cal pushed Teagan O’Dell and Mia West into the A final, plus Kathryn Hazle in ninth.

Back on his home coast, Florida native Josh Zuchowski picked a fine time to deliver a massive best time. Just the 17th seed entering the race, Zuchowski went 3:39.17. That’s within a second of Robert Owen’s 2017 meet record, and it’s more than three seconds under the best time of 3:42.22 he set at ACCs last year.
A teammate joins him in the A final, with Ethan Ekk fifth in 3:41.52. Jackson Millard of Louisville was second in 3:39.86, with teammate Gregg Enoch fourth. Ryan Erisman of Cal was the only other swimmer to break 3:40, and mate Humberto Najera joins him in the A final.

Claire Curzan is the one to beat, her time of 49.19 nearly a second up on Torri Huske, though the Stanford swimmer will likely have something to stay about it. Curzan, with a seed time of 49.13, and Huske at 48.90 were the only two swimmers entering the meet sub-50.
Each leader has a teammate for company. Stanford’s Gigi Johnson joins Huske in 50.65 for third. Sara Curtis complements Curzan for Virginia in fourth at 50.85. NC State has two in the final with Leah Shackley seventh and Erika Pelaez eighth.

Men’s 100 butterfly
NC State won all four finals Wednesday night. Thursday night’s slate is more sedate. That magnifies what Aiden Hayes did.
Hayes went 44.40 to grab the top time in the 100 fly. He’s .35 seconds over Pitt’s Julian Koch, part of a stellar meet from the Panthers so far. Thomas Heilman was third in 44.78.
NC State got a boost from Arsenio Bustos, a big-game IMer, adding a 100 fly final to his program by dropping nearly two seconds to 45.19. Cal is without an A finalist, while Stanford has only Rafael Gu in seventh.

Anna Moesch is knocking on the door of 1:40, her time of 1:41.67 giving her a middle lane for the chase at night. She is more than a second clear of the field, as she has been for much of the year it seems. Virginia has a chance to score big – what else is new? – with Madi Mintenko third in 1:43.26, Cavan Gormsen fourth and Bailey Hartman seventh.
The second seed in the final is Virginia Tech’s Carmen Weiler Sastre in 1:43.05. Claire Weinstein is fifth for Cal. Gigi Johnson pulled an impressive double by qualifying sixth in 1:44.02 to join Stanford teammate Anna Olasewere in the final.
