After putting tense history behind, Nick Kyrgios e Casper Ruud own notable Slam feat

by

A tennis fan dug up an interesting stat as Nick Kyrgios and Casper Ruud are the only male players in the 21st century to reach a Grand Slam final in singles and in men's or mixed doubles.

In early 2022, Kyrgios made his first Grand Slam final of any sort when he lifted the Australian Open men's doubles title alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis. Half a year later, the Australian also reached his first Major singles final at Wimbledon before falling short to Novak Djokovic.

On the other side, Ruud lost back-to-back French Open singles finals in 2022 and 2023, while he also fell short in the 2022 US Open title match. At the start of this week, the Norwegian teamed up with Iga Swiatek in the revamped US Open mixed doubles competition. And the Norwegian/Polish duo came just a set away from securing the title before Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori earned a narrow 6-3 5-7 10-6 win.

Why Kyrgios & Ruud owning this feat is a bit funny?

If you remember well, the two have a bit of history. Before Kyrgios was disqualified from their 2019 Rome Masters match, he was called "an idiot on the court" by his rival. Three years later after the Australian beat the Norwegian at the Indian Wells Masters, he cheekily shouted: "I hear no talking now. I hear no talking now. None."

But all of that changed in late 2024 when Kyrgios and Ruud teamed up for doubles at the World Tennis League and even won a match against Sumit Nagal and Jordan Thompson.

"Funny how things do a 360 – what we calling this duo @casperruud. Absolute pleasure playing alongside you," the 29-year-old captioned his Instagram post following their doubles match," the Australian wrote on Instagram afterward. In the comment section, the Norwegian wrote: "Fire & Ice!!"
