Alabama Takes Down Georgia Tech in Saturday Dual Meet
The Alabama Crimson Tide welcomed Georgia Tech’s swimming and diving teams to Tuscaloosa this week, and the home team was victorious. The women won 233-66 while the men’s score was 205-93.
In the women’s 400 medley relay, Alabama’s team of Emily Jones, Jada Scott, Gaby Van Brunt and Cadence Vincent dominated with a time of 3:29.67. Jones was the clear winner of the 100 backstroke (51.37) as well as the 200 back (1:53.55), and Van Brunt was first in the 200 butterfly (1:56.36) plus the 100 fly (52.14). Vincent swept the 50 freestyle (21.91) and 100 free (47.93).
Alabama’s Mackenzie Brandt took first in the 1000 free (9:41.85) and 500 free (4:43.21), and Emma Sundermeyer won the 200 free (1:47.17). Charlotte Rosendale was the only swimmer under 1:00 in the 100 breaststroke (59.92) while Sydney Blackhurst won the 200 breast (2:14.10).
In diving, Alabama’s Rin Drudge topped 1-meter (275.18) and 3-meter (291.45), and Sydney Sanders closed out the individual event slate with a winning time of 4:15.36 in the 400 IM. Rosendale, Jones, Tessa Giele and Vincent topped the 200 free relay in 1:27.53, with Vincent providing a 21.49 split on the anchor leg.
The men’s competition began with Alabama’s Tommy Hagar, Noah Saylor, Sean Niewold and Zarek Wilson beating the field in the 400 medley relay by a substantial margin with a time of 3:07.28. Hagar won the 200 free (1:35.09) and 200 back (1:41.07), and Saylor grabbed first in the 100 breast (53.83). Niewold finished in 19.52 for the win in the 50 free.
Leonardo Alcantara came out on top in a tight 1000 free (8:52.77) before he cruised in the 500 free (4:16.56). Cole Witmer was the first-place finisher in the 100 back (46.53). In the 200 fly, Gabriel Moura topped Georgia Tech’s Berk Erturk by one hundredth, 1:44.68 to 1:44.69. Bama’s Jonathan Hoole led the way in the 100 free (43.39), and Tim Korstanje beat the field by three hundredths in the 100 fly (46.94).
Lance Johnson crushed the field in the 400 IM (3:47.05), and the team of Niewold, Korstanje, Drayden Bell and Wilson capped off the meet with a top finish in the 200 free relay (1:17.44)
Georgia Tech’s Max Fowler swept the men’s diving events, scoring 360.23 on 1-meter and 381.90 on 3-meter. Tobin Uhl got his team’s only swimming win with a time of 1:58.09 in the 200 breast.
