Dec. 4: Cubs showing ‘renewed interest’ in Bregman (report)
The Cubs reportedly made a four-year offer to third baseman Alex Bregman last offseason before he ultimately signed with the Red Sox. And according to a report in The Athletic (subscription required), the North Siders are showing “renewed interest” in the three-time All-Star.
With Kyle Tucker, whom Chicago traded for prior to last season, on the free-agent market, the prospect of losing Tucker’s production at the plate could be behind the club’s interest in Bregman. Although he missed some time due to injury in 2025, Bregman posted an .822 OPS with 18 home runs for Boston and has an impressive track record.
With incumbent third baseman Matt Shaw still finding his bearings at the Major League level, as well as Moisés Ballesteros — the organization’s No. 2 prospect (No. 53 overall) — just having made his big league debut last season, the Cubs may need to consider external augmentation in order to make up for the lost offense if Tucker signs elsewhere.
Dec. 3: Bregman viewed as ‘most likely fit’ for Red Sox
MLB Network insider Jon Heyman recently reported in the New York Post (subscription required) that the Red Sox are interested in signing two of these five free-agent hitters: Bregman, Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso, J.T. Realmuto and Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto. Among that crowd, Heyman views Bregman as the “most likely fit” for Boston.
Nov. 25: Re-signing Bregman remains ‘primary goal’ for Red Sox (report)
At the GM Meetings earlier this month, the Red Sox made no secret about the team’s top priorities this winter. According to chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, they were going into the offseason with two main goals: add a No. 2 starter they could slot behind ace Garrett Crochet in a playoff series, and acquire a big bat after Alex Bregman opted out.
They checked off one of those boxes on Tuesday, reaching a trade with the Cardinals for right-hander Sonny Gray. With Gray in the fold, the Red Sox can turn their focus to their lineup.
According to a report from The Athletic on Tuesday morning, re-signing Bregman remains “a primary goal” for the Red Sox, though Boston was also linked to several top free-agent hitters earlier this month, including Pete Alonso, Bo Bichette and Kyle Schwarber.
Nov. 4: Bregman opts out
Bregman has opted out of his contract with the Red Sox to become a free agent once again. Bregman, who will turn 32 in March, had two years left on the three-year, $120 million deal he signed in February after nine seasons in Houston.
If Bregman and the Red Sox are unable to come to an agreement this winter, a few teams are expected to have interest, chief among them the Tigers, who reportedly made Bregman a six-year, $171.5 million offer last winter. Choosing Detroit would also mean a reunion for Bregman and A.J. Hinch, his manager with the Astros from 2016-19.
