TYR Summer Championships, Day Four Finals: Alex Shackell, Madi Mintenko Close Meet with Victories

Call it a do-or-die night at the TYR Summer Championships.

The four-day meet in Southern California will come to a conclusion on Friday night, but not before a handful of athletes work toward organizing their schedule for the Summer of 2026. The TYR Champs serve as one of the selection competitions for next year’s Pan Pacific Championships, and several swimmers will try to produce times at the William Woollett Aquatic Center that will grant them participation.

Alex Shackell is currently on the qualification fence in the 100-meter butterfly and 200 butterfly, and will contest the 200 fly at the TYR meet with the hopes of going faster than 2:05.80. Meanwhile, Hunter Armstrong will chase a performance quicker than 24.44 in the 50 backstroke, and should be carrying confidence after flashing 21.76 career-best speed earlier in the meet in the 50 freestyle.

The Friday night schedule will open with the women’s 800 freestyle and follow with women’s and men’s action in the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 50 backstroke. The men’s 1500 freestyle will also be raced.

Here’s an event-by-event recap of the Day Four finals:

Backing up her win in the 1500 freestyle from the opening night of the meet, Australian Tiana Kritzinger withstood late challenges from countrywoman Molly Walker and Gena Jorgenson to win the 800 freestyle. Kritzinger hit the wall in 8:32.98, with Walker going 8:34.04. Walker closed in 29.54 over the final 50 meters, enabling her to move ahead of Jorgenson.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

A fist pump at the finish revealed the satisfaction of 17-year-old Madi Mintenko in the 200 freestyle. Headed for the University of Virginia, Mintenko followed up her personal best in prelims with another career best in the final, clocking 1:56.95. Mintenko was out slightly slower at night, turning at the midway point in 57.16, but she had more in reserve for the finish to go sub-1:57 for the first time.

Mintenko, whose time is sixth-best by an American during the Pan Pacs qualification period, was pressed down the stretch by Australian Jaimie De Lutiis. De Lutiis, who secured second place behind a swim of 1:57.28, was comfortably ahead of the 1:58.92 from Justin Kozan.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

It was an Indiana show in the final of the 100 breaststroke, with the Hoosiers qualifying six athletes. Ultimately, the race produced a stellar duel between Alexei Avakov and Van Mathias. It was Avakov who rallied down the second lap to touch in 59.65, which was slightly faster than the 59.74 of Mathias.

Mathias, the winner of the 50 breaststroke earlier in the meet, took the lead on the opening length, where he split 27.55, to the 28.28 of Avakov. But over the closing 50 meters, Avakov split 31.37, to the 32.19 of Mathias. Finishing third was Australian Joshua Collett, who went 1:00.56.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

As was the case earlier in the week, the Shackell family made it a pair of victories. After older brother Aaron Shackell won the 200 freestyle, Alex Shackell cruised to a triumph in the 200 butterfly. Shackell led throughout the four laps and touched the wall in 2:06.75, a little more than a half-second shy of her personal best of 2:06.10. She finished more than three seconds in front of Aussie Bella Grant (2:10.24).

Shackell will be in waiting mode to see if she earns a spot to the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships. She currently sits third in the 100 butterfly rankings, with just the World Junior Championships to come as part of the selection process.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

In trademark fashion, Trenton Julian pushed the pace early and built a sizable lead on the field. The approach delivered a first-place finish in 1:55.17, which was just off the 1:54.89 he clocked during the prelims. Julian was out in 53.16 at the 100-meter mark and came home with splits of 29.71 and 32.30.

Second place went to Jack Dahlgren, who recently captured the gold medal in the 200 fly at the World University Games. Dahlgren touched in 1:57.76, with third going to Tommy Bried (1:58.65).

Women’s 50 Backstroke

Australia’s Semra Olowoniyi was the only athlete to go sub-28 during the prelims, and she managed the feat again during finals. Olowoniyi sprinted one lap in 27.93, which was .06 quicker than her morning effort. The time was also enough to beat Erika Pelaez, who grabbed second place in 28.07. Aussie Layla Day was third in 28.24.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

North Carolina State’s Aiden Hayes backed up his No. 1 seed by shaving .12 off his prelims swim and winning the 50 backstroke in 24.74. Hayes needed every bit of that speed, as Grant Bochenski also broke the 25-second barrier. Bochenski clocked a time of 24.79. Third place went to Jack Wilkening in 25.02.

In fifth and sixth were former World Championships medalists Hunter Armstrong and Justin Ress, who posted respective times of 25.15 and 25.32.

Men’s 1500 Freestyle

Team USA member David Johnston, coming off the World Championships in Singapore, won the 1500 freestyle in 15:02.15. That time was almost four seconds ahead of the 15:06.04 by 16-year-old Colin Jacobs, who was terrific on the way to a swim of 15:06.04. That time outs Jacobs No. 4 all-time in the 15-16 age group in the event, trailing American distance legends Bobby Hackett, Larsen Jensen and Bobby Finke.
