Alexander Zverev would like to have a much better second part of the season than the first, in which he won only one title (on the red clay of Munich) suffering several surprising defeats. In particular, the former world number 2 was not competitive enough in Grand Slam tournaments and confided that something broke in his mind after the clear defeat against Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final.
The German ace thought he was finally close to breaking this curse and the improvements made in the latter part of last year had impressed both fans and insiders, but his certainties crumbled in a short time and Sascha's weaknesses surfaced again.
Waiting to see whether or not Alexander will start a stable collaboration with Toni Nadal, the star from Hamburg has just reached the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters 1000. The world number 3 is the huge favorite in this edition of the Canadian Open, which has been heavily conditioned by the numerous absences among the top players.
He was able to benefit from Francisco Cerundolo's retirement in the round of 16, with the Argentine ace being forced to leave the court in the early stages of the second set.
Sascha's new milestone
After achieving his 500th victory on the ATP tour thanks to his victory over Matteo Arnaldi, Zverev reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 tournament for the 33rd time in his career. He occupies the tenth position all-time in this special ranking, preceded by true legends such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Pete Sampras, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.
Sascha has no intention of being remembered as the best player ever to have never won a Major title, which is why he will give his best already at the US Open scheduled in New York from August 24 to September 7. The former world No.2 reached the final in the Big Apple five years ago.
