Alexander Zverev on why he chose to reveal his diabetes to the world

by

Alexander Zverev is considered by many to be one of the best tennis players, and his recent form has been causing optimism in tennis circles.

Alexander wants to be superior in the rest of the season, get back in shape and be as dominant as he was at the Australian Open.

Although he was defeated in the semifinals by Carlos Alcaraz, Zverev was certainly the toughest opponent for the Spaniard.

The German tennis player is known to be a diabetic, and in August 2022 he revealed that he has type 1 diabetes, which he has had since he was three or four years old.

Zverev kept his diagnosis a secret for a long time, emphasizing that he did not want every win or loss to be interpreted through his disease, but also admitted that he was embarrassed to talk about it.

The German tennis player started the Alexander Zverev Foundation, which helps children with diabetes gain access to insulin, medication and the necessary support.

However, Zverev decided to take a bold step and in his latest interview with Punto de Break, the 28-year-old revealed the reasons why he decided to talk about his diagnosis.

The injury at Roland Garros was the key to his decision.

"Since childhood, I had to balance diabetes with sports. For many years, I preferred not to talk too much about the topic, but after my injury at Roland Garros, I had time to think and realized that it was important to help others through my example. Nothing lasts forever in life, not even tennis, so I am determined to fully enjoy what I do," he said, as quoted by Punto de Break.

Zverev's goals

Alexander Zverev does not want diabetes to be the main topic around him, and he does not want it to be used as an excuse for poor performances.

He pointed out that diabetes did not prevent him from realizing his biggest dream – to become a professional tennis player and win one of the Grand Slam tournaments. The German tennis player hopes to win many more Grand Slams in the future and to become an example to children suffering from the same disease, showing that nothing is impossible.
