Amani Lyles leads Akron men’s basketball to big offensive night in win

The Akron men’s basketball team continued to put up big offensive numbers in rolling to a 105-81 win over visiting Milwaukee on Saturday, Nov. 29.

The Zips have surpassed 90 points in four straight games and they have scored more than 100 in three straight home games. Akron also has won 20 straight home games.

Against Milwaukee, the Zips (6-2) shot 65% from the floor and had seven player score in double figures, including all five starters. Akron got it done inside and out, scoring 50 points in the paint and making 12 of 23 3-point shots.

Amani Lyles led the way with a career-high 25 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Tavari Johnson dished out a career-high 11 assists and scored 11 points. The Zips had 24 assists overall.

Evan Mahaffey added 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Shammah Scott scored 14 points. Eric Mahaffey, Sharron Young and Chabi Barre were Akron‘s other double-figure scorers.

Defensively, Akron limited Milwaukee to 37.7% shooting from the field. The Zips blocked six shots and forced 13 turnovers.

The Zips used a 7-0 run early in the first half to take a 14-7 lead and never trailed after that. Their lead was 52-39 at the half, with 28 of their points coming in the paint. The Zips pulled away from there in the second half.

Akron basketball’s next game

Akron plays another home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 when Bucknell (2-6) visits.
