Andrea Camozzi Sets 200 Fly EJR As Italian Championships Wrap Up

Andrea Camozzi wrote his name in the record books with a European junior record in the 200 fly as the Italian Championships wrapped up in Riccione.

The 20-year-old from Bergamo posted 1:51.62 to take 0.22 off the previous EJR of 1:51.84 set by Krzysztof Chmielewski as he finished 0.01 and one place off the final at the 2021 short-course worlds in Abu Dhabi.

Chmielewski went on to match that time in front of a home crowd in Poznan, Poland, in November 2022.

Now though Camozzi has penned his own entry in history after taking two seconds off the 1:53.62 PB he set last month.

It elevates him from eighth to second all-time in the Italian rankings behind only Alberto Razzetti and his national record of 1:48.64 from last year’s short-course worlds.

Hailing from Bergamo and coached by Matteo Giunta at CC Aniene, Camozzi has a fine sporting heritage with his father Ivano having come fourth in the giant slalom at the 1998 Winter Olympics.

He’s already enjoyed success on the European junior stage with 200 fly gold at the continental junior championships in 2023.

Federico Burdisso (1:52.45) and Claudio Antonio Faraci (1:52.63) shared the podium with Camozzi.

Elsewhere, Silvia Di Pietro won the women’s 50 free in 24:01 while Ludovico Viberti dipped inside 26secs for a 25.99 victory in the 50 breaststroke.

Mattia Morello won his first Italian title with a two-second PB of 1:52.15 in the 200 back. Federica Toma won the women’s event in 2:05.58, also a new best.

Anna Pirovano took the women’s 400IM (4:30.75) and Davide Dalla Costa took the men’s 200 free in 1:44.03.
