Andrey Rublev has reached the top positions of the ATP rankings not only thanks to his talent and dedication, but also thanks to the fundamental contribution of his coach Fernando Vicente. The latter has been following the Russian ace for many years and has certainly played an important role in his rise, which is why their collaboration has never been questioned despite the lackluster results obtained by Andrey in recent times.
The star from Moscow – who reached the quarterfinals at the Toronto Masters 1000 and secured a place in the Top 10 of the ATP rankings again – has faced a serious crisis over the past year and this has prevented him from expressing his best tennis in most tournaments.
Rublev pays tribute to Vicente
Rublev decided to ask his compatriot Marat Safin for help to regain confidence, but Vicente has always remained by his side and the Russian champion has never thought of parting with him.
During his latest press conference in Canada, Rublev explained why Vicente is so important to him: "Our relationship goes far beyond that between a player and his coach, it's like he's a member of my family. He sacrificed a good part of his private life to be next to me, especially when I needed it most and I couldn't have met a better person in the world of tennis. We have an exceptional relationship and we enjoy being together."
Andrey also added: "Fernando doesn't work with me for financial reasons, but he really wants to help me become the best player I can be. He has done some things for me that no coach would do, he has extraordinary values. Many players change coaches in this period, but in my opinion when you are a Top 10 no one can teach you anything. You are all that you need to make the necessary corrections. You can't always ask for help from others, otherwise you'll never grow."
The Russian champion – who reached the final in Montreal last season – will face Taylor Fritz for a semifinal spot in Toronto.
