Being a star of the tennis scene means that you are compared to the legends of this sport. Carlos Alcaraz is the dominant face of the tennis scene, and his successes during all these years best demonstrate the superiority. Fans and experts often compare him with names like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and many others.
These are names that left a deep mark in the world of tennis, so it's no wonder where these comparisons come from. Some expect Carlos to surpass the achievements of the ‘Big Three’ and other tennis legends.
In his podcast, Andy Roddick drew a parallel between Alcaraz and members of the Big Three, leaving out Novak Djokovic. Andy obviously does not see the similarities between the 22-year-old and the experienced Serb.
“I think Carlos [Alcaraz] is a marriage of Roger [Federer], Rafa [Nadal], and [Andy] Murray, actually,” said Roddick, as quoted by Tennis Gazette.
Chris Eubanks disagreed with his position, believing that Carlos Alcaraz has certain characteristics of Novak Djokovic.
“I see elements of the Big Four in Carlos’ game. Every single one of them,” said Eubanks.
“The second serve return, we see Carlos stepping up close to the baseline, stinging it on the backhand side, which reminds me of Murray.
“When he’s hitting the forehand, usually, I would say it’s a bit more like Rafa, but I think his running forehand, and when he’s looking to take time away, his skills at the net resemble Roger, undoubtedly.
“And of course, Novak, his defensive skills out of the corners, being able to inject pace on the backhand, scrap and claw.”
Andy Roddick on Jannik Sinner
Andy Roddick later shared an interesting opinion, with which some disagree, saying that Sinner reminds him much more of Novak Djokovic. Roddick stresses that Sinner, even though he is taller, knows how to control the game from the back line, making matches more exciting.
However, he also sees some of the differences, stressing that the Italian leans more towards an aggressive front foot attack, wanting to take the initiative earlier.
Whether Novak would agree with this opinion is difficult to say with precision, but Sinner can be proud to be compared with names like Novak. In any case, Jannik deserves such comparisons.
