Angel Reese landing spots: Sky superstar could play elsewhere in 2026

by

Chicago Sky superstar forward Angel Reese might be playing elsewhere in the WNBA next season.

After she made critical comments about the franchise and some of its players in a recent interview, the Sky suspended her for half of their Sept. 7 game for making “statements detrimental to the team.”

Reese didn’t finish the year with a back injury, even after the suspension lapsed.

ANGEL REESE: A brief timeline of her tense Sky relationship

Sky coach Tyler Marsh didn’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence in her returning to the team next season as Chicago’s season ended on Thursday. Reese’s relationship with the team hasn’t always been perfect, but this latest incident could spell the end of her time with the Sky. A trade feels more possible now than it ever has.

SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM: Her Angel Reese criticism is actually pretty chillWhile we’re not sure when a hypothetical trade would happen because of the expiring CBA between the players association and the league and the looming possibility of a lockout, Reese playing elsewhere in 2026 may very well happen.

Let’s break down some possible landing spots in the event a trade does materialize down the road, though we’ll hold off on speculating possible trade compensation for now.

Minnesota Lynx

The Lynx could lose some of their better veteran players in free agency while trying to pay superstar forward Napheesa Collier what she’s deservedly worth. Trading for Reese would keep Minnesota in title contention next season with a superstar player on a rookie contract, something that the Lynx will value after the CBA resets.

The Valkyries would be a perfect landing spot for Reese, as she’d instantly become Golden State’s franchise face. While coach Natalie Nakase loves opening up her best scorers for 3-pointers, having a player like Reese to set a tone in the post would give the Valkyries a new gear inside the paint. The fit here is incredibly intriguing.

The Mystics have one of the best young duos in the WNBA with guard Sonia Citron and forward Kiki Iriafen. Adding Reese to that starting lineup would be huge for Washington to assert itself as a title contender next season. We’d be fascinated to see how a lineup with Citron, Iriafen and Reese would play together.

Seattle Storm

The Storm could lose a lot of veteran talent next offseason (since, y’know, pretty much every veteran player is a free agent). Trading for Reese would be a huge swing by Seattle to ensure that emerging rookie center Dominique Malonga has another strong young player on the roster. Malonga and Reese together could give the Storm the best young frontcourt duo in the entire WNBA. Of all the teams on this list, this one intrigues us the most.

Dallas Wings

Paige Bueckers is the truth.

Paige Bueckers is the truth.

Sure, having superstar guard Paige Bueckers and Reese on the same team just sounds unfair for everyone else. However, it’s a real possibility. Dallas needs to keep building around Bueckers, and adding Reese would give the Wings an incredibly formidable pair of superstars for the long haul. Reese could thrive playing next to Bueckers.

One of the WNBA’s expansion teams could trade for Reese and instantly have a franchise player on their roster. We wonder if one of the teams hires former Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon, who Reese had a close relationship with during her rookie season. If Weatherspoon joined one of these teams, Reese following would make a lot of sense.
