The Arizona Wildcats have emerged as the clear frontrunner in college basketball, opening the season with a perfect 12–0 record and earning the No. 1 spot in the latest AP Top 25 poll. Behind a combination of young talent, veteran leadership and physical play, Arizona has built one of the most impressive resumes in the country.

The Wildcats made an immediate statement on opening night in Las Vegas, knocking off reigning national champion Florida. Freshman Koa Peat announced himself on the national stage with a dominant 30-point performance, setting the tone for what has been a remarkable debut season. Since then, Arizona has continued to pile up quality wins, defeating UConn, Alabama, UCLA, Auburn and San Diego State. Even more impressive, only one of those victories came on Arizona’s home court in Tucson.
Arizona’s win over UConn in Storrs stands out as one of the most eye-opening results of the season. Winning in that environment is difficult for any team, and the Wildcats handled it with poise, toughness and balance, further solidifying their case as the nation’s top team.
Under head coach Tommy Lloyd, Arizona looks different than in past seasons. The Wildcats are tougher and more physical, especially on the defensive end. They currently rank among the top five teams nationally in defensive efficiency, while still maintaining a strong offensive attack. Arizona dominates inside with its frontcourt play, yet also shoots nearly 38 percent from three-point range, making it difficult for opponents to defend.

While Peat shined early, fellow freshman Brayden Burries has taken on a larger scoring role in recent games. Senior point guard Jaden Bradley has been steady and reliable, playing like one of the best floor generals in the country. Inside, the center duo of Motiejus Krivas and Tobe Awaka provides size, rebounding and rim protection that few teams can match.
Arizona’s Big 12 schedule becomes more challenging in February, when matchups against Kansas, Houston and Baylor await. Before that stretch, the Wildcats’ toughest test may come on Jan. 26 at BYU. A road trip to Provo to face a talented Cougars team led by potential No. 1 NBA draft pick AJ Dybantsa will be a major measuring stick.
For now, Arizona continues to check every box, looking every bit like a championship contender.
