Asia Cup 2025- BCCI President chair vacant as Roger Binny flies away to Thailand

by

Roger Binny has been disqualified as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), leading to confusion over leadership within the board. According to the BCCI constitution, officials above the age of 70 are not eligible to continue in their role, creating uncertainty around Binny’s future.

The BCCI constitution states that any office-bearer who reaches the age of 70 becomes disqualified. Roger Binny celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday, July 19. However, the draft Sports Bill allows a person elected before turning 70 to complete their term, even if they cross the age limit during their tenure.

Roger Binny Disqualified as BCCI President Upon Turning 70

According to the BCCI constitution (Page 30), any office-bearer who turns 70 is automatically disqualified from continuing in their role. It was reported that BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla can take over as interim president.

However, Binny may remain as president until the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September. He could continue informally, without signing official documents or performing administrative duties.

According to a recent Cricbuzz report, Binny might be allowed to serve in a caretaker capacity until the AGM, retaining the title but refraining from active responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Shukla is awaiting clarity from the board’s senior officials. With several of them recently attending the ICC Annual Conference in Singapore, formal decisions regarding the leadership transition have been delayed.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Set to Introduce the Bill

The proposed Sports Governance Bill, set to be introduced by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, may impact the current BCCI leadership situation.

As per the bill, the age limit for office-bearers in national sports federations will be raised from 70 to 75 and is expected to override existing constitutions, including that of the BCCI. If passed, it would allow Roger Binny to continue in his role and serve a new three-year term.

So far, the BCCI has not issued any official statement regarding Binny’s position, but the timing of the bill could delay or negate any immediate leadership transition.

Roger Binny is Currently Vacationing in Thailand with His Family

The Cricbuzz report added that Roger Binny is currently vacationing in Thailand with his family to celebrate his birthday. He had earlier travelled to London for the Lord’s Test before heading to Thailand, where he was joined by his daughters and grandchildren from Australia.

Binny has not issued any public statement about his position as BCCI President. However, it was reported that more clarity on the matter could emerge in the coming days.

“”However, it is understood that clarity may emerge in the coming days, said a source in the knowledge of the situation,” the report read.

He is expected to consult with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and the board’s legal department to assess the situation and decide the next course of action after returning to India.
