With six wins in his NASCAR Cup Series career now, does Austin Dillon not get the credit he deserves in the sport? A Truck Series and Xfinity Series champion, Dillon has never risen to that level in Cup, but he has shown that he can get it done in a win-and-in era.
Most NASCAR fans likely think about Daytona when they think about Austin Dillon and winning races. However, his last two wins have now been at Richmond, a short track. Following the controversy of last year’s win, Dillon did things the right way this time around.
So, what does Dillon think about the treatment he gets from the NASCAR world? Does he think he’s been shorted credit where it is due?
“I think I get the credit I deserve, man,” Dillon explained after the race. “I have some great fans out there. It’s cool when I go out and sign autographs. I have some loyal fans because they’ve had to go through a struggle at times.
“We’re kind of like a fighter. We don’t go away. I think a lot of people think that guy is going to go away at some point. We’re able to claw, chip, find ways. I like that underdog mentality a little bit. Yeah, no it feels pretty good. I won two Xfinity championships, quite a few Cup races now. This one probably one of the best ones because no drama, and it was pretty much a butt kicking there. It was good.”
It seems like Austin Dillon is happy with his place in NASCAR. He has been able to make a consistent career out of racing and has six wins to show for it. That is more than many drivers can say for themselves.
Austin Dillon avenges controversial win at Richmond
Whatever the reason, Austin Dillon and Richmond Raceway go hand-in-hand. To win last season was one thing, but to come back and do it again this season is impressive. Perhaps there was a glimpse of this when Dillon was P10 at Iowa a couple of weeks ago.
Out of the four previous trips to the playoffs that Dillon made, he made it to the Round of 12 three times. He has finished P11 three times and P13 once. So, he could be a surprise driver in the Round of 12 if he has similar runs to his previous playoff trips.
Richard Childress Racing now needs to repeat Kyle Busch’s run at Daytona from a year ago. This time, they will hope that the Chevy pushes the Chevy on the last lap and Busch walks away the winner.
