Setting the Stage: Venice Beach

Episode 8 takes viewers inside the rematch of the East Coast vs. West Coast Squad. The last episode showed the heated rivalry amongst the squads, with the East taking game one. With a $10,000 check and bragging rights on the line, this episode details one last dance between the teams.

The first segment recaps the prior matchups, which were filled with fights, chaos, and heightened tensions. The early documentation reinforces how quickly competition can turn into confrontation with heated turmoil.

Game 2 Begins!

The second game is a close matchup, with the East and West tied 5-5.Β  Nasir “Nas” Core is seen throwing lobs to Dibaji Walker, and the East takes a 6-5 lead. That was until Brandon “BodyBag” Moss delivered a fairly violent dunk over Walker, striking him with an elbow, knocking out his tooth. This signals the intense gameplay and physicality that can occur in streetball matchups.

As the matchup goes on, director Janine Sides captures the typical crowd at a streetball event. With fans reacting instantly, they are often seen surrounding the court with phones out.

At this time, Nas extends a 7-5 lead for the East at the charity stripe, and the squad continues its run powered by the duo of Nas and Walker. Stretching the lead 11-7, the East cruises to a 12-8 advantage.

A Shift in the West: Frank Nitty Takes Control

The West is typically a dominant team that often takes the lead in matchups, 3-0. Having already defeated the East in the previous matchup, Tor’i “Bionic” Brooks urges the West to increase its communication. That said, streetball legend Frank Nitty must step up as the leader. He initially resists, pondering if the squad can hold its own without him.Β  Nitty ultimately steps up, which leads to a momentum shift for the West.

As the old saying goes, “Fix what fails,” and the West did exactly that. Implementing small adjustments, BodyBag suggests switching from a larger to a smaller lineup, while Nitty takes on a larger role, directing players and defining roles within the squad.

The tides turned following the tweaks, and the West gained some momentum following defensive stops and steals. At this point, the deficit is cut to two points, as the East leads 12-10 after BodyBag sparks the run for the West.

Heated Rivalry: Ty Glover vs. Deebones

Tensions continue to rise, this time igniting fireworks between Ty Glover and Dajour “Deebones” Joseph. Last episode featured Marcus “Monstar” Bell’s on-court meltdown that led to an ejection. This time, trash talk erupts on and off the court as Ty’s former stepfather is seen talking trash, targeting Deebones on the sideline.

While it wasn’t justified, Ty responds, further escalating the conflict. For Deebones, he responds with his game. Backing up his talk on the court, he continued to knock down floaters and open threes. Playing exceptionally well, Deebones talks back to Ty’s stepfather after scoring. This segment truly exemplifies the raw emotions that are shown during streetball matchups.

Who Takes Game 2?

East Coast guard Austin Mills calls Nas the “Nucleus” of the East, although it’s apparent he felt the fatigue late in the game. Taking over the game, Nitty records a steal from Deebones, immediately trolling him by continuously dribbling.

And what does Nitty do? He scores inside, giving the West a 13-12 lead, and Marcus hits a jumper to extend the lead to 14-12. With the game on the line, Nas throws a bad pass, commits a turnover, and the game-winning bucket comes in transition from BodyBag.

With the West taking Game 2, the series is tied 1-1, and this episode will carry us through the finish line. Who will end up winning the rematch? Let’s look ahead.

Ty Glover’s Journey

Episode 8 takes viewers and fans inside the real life of West Coast squad member, Ty Glover. As Ballislife has done with several players on both sides, they look at Glover’s personal life and his journey to the asphalt.

A crucial player for the West, Glover emphasized that every player on the roster mattered in the game 2 victory over the East.

A native of San Bernardino, California, Glover describes the city as violent and dangerous. Struggling in high school, he admits he had trouble attending class and fitting in with the wrong friend group. Growing up in a single-parent household, he credits his mother largely for pushing him towards basketball and recognizing his talents.

Although changing schools, Glover eventually laces up for the San Bernardino Cardinals Basketball team and credits coach Darin Graham for transforming his life. Leading Glover back on track, Graham was the father figure Ty never had, making sure he was fed and setting him straight in school.

Oftentimes, people face challenges at the wrong time, and a wave of bad luck struck Glover. Having signed with an NBA agent after college, there was one catastrophic event that blocked every avenue: the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not only did the pandemic derail opportunities to play basketball overseas, but it also cut off any possibilities of joining the G League. With his agent suing and facing legal issues, Glover nearly walked away from the game he loved. That was until influencer and hooper Allan “White Irishman” helped restore his love for basketball. Had it not been for his influencer friends, his future could have taken a different path.

Joining Ballislife

From there, Ty connected with Ballislife Co-founders Matt Rodriguez and Arek Kissoyan. With the ability to showcase his talent, full of athleticism and the ability to dunk, Ballislife viewed things in full. From his goofy, outgoing personality to Ty’s skills on the hardwood, the brand recognized his talents.

Eventually, his Ballislife career skyrocketed after his viral inbound dunk went viral across social media. While playing in the NBA was always the dream, Ty loves to play basketball and acknowledges that there are other ways to do so. Along with so many others, Ballislife has changed his life by providing a different avenue. Nearly three years later, Ty is working for Ballislife as a hooper, influencer, and model.

Saying he’s playing at the highest-level, Glover says, “You don’t have to be in the NBA to show you’re at this level.” This is extremely vital as a small percentage of college players advance to the NBA. Different opportunities in basketball can greatly impact the younger generations to come.

Game 3: Who Takes it?

With the series tied 1-1, the East loses its momentum as the team reverts to its old ways with iso-heavy offense. As Nitty pointed out, the East could never rebound after their game 2 loss.

The West struck first, finding success through lobs and inside scoring. Even amid the trash talk, it’s Deebones who is the most efficient player in the East. As the West pulls away, the East gets desperate, committing physical fouls. Nitty, who’s normally away from the fights and described as calm, nearly smacked his head on the concrete following a hard foul.

Uncharacteristic of Nitty, he gets increasingly frustrated as hard fouls nearly turn into injury. Following this, tensions rise between Mills and Nitty, as Mills has repeatedly fouled Frank.

Leading up to the most chaotic sequence of events, Nitty secures Game 3 with a free-throw, and the West takes a 2-1 series lead.

All Eyes on Game 4

With the West up 2-1, it all comes down to Game 4. All the preparation, trash talk, and allβ€”the outcome rests on this matchup.

As the sun sets, tipoff begins. With high stakes and emotions ahead, things get spicy after contact between Ty and Deebones. Following a loose ball, tempers are flaring, and a full altercation is front and center. While Ty did make contact with Deebones, he’s encouraged to apologize, and does so. Met with resistance from Deebones, it only escalates from here, and Ty is ejected from the game despite holding himself accountable.

As Mills said, apologies can only do so much, but there was too much bad blood in the air. As seen, people’s attempts to de-escalate the situation include Rodriguez himself.

While Nas gets the East on the board, the West commands an early 6-2 lead, which extends to 8-2. At this point, trash talk is in full force, with Nitty talking his stuff, followed by a step back shot.

Skywalker misses a shot for the East, as Nitty grabs the board. Walking up the court, he uses a screen to score the game-winning bucket inside. Defeating the East 15-8, the West Coast squad wins the series 3-1, and once again remains undefeated against the East. Celebrating another $10,000 check, the West remains triumphant.

Actions Have Consequences

While fans were seen celebrating on the court, the latter part of the episode focused on reflection and accountability. Featuring a 1-on-1 with Ballislife co-owner Rodriguez and Glover, Ty accepts responsibility for his actions, but Rodriguez emphasizes setting examples for younger audiences in the crowd and representing the brand.

With the West up 12-4, Rodriguez didn’t understand Glover’s actions and emphasized that there couldn’t be another incident following the one with Marcus. In Ty’s defense, East players have personal issues, which often bring out emotions on the court.

Outside of the first game, Matt says the East genuinely played well, though he wishes the first game had never happened. With more at play, Glover and the other must work on their actions that cause such consequences.

Much of the matchup featured hostility and ejections for Marcus and Ty. Matt said that, for many, basketball is an escape, often a safe place

“It’s a story you hate to see. Isn’t that the story of their career, though? They have an immense amount of talent, but they are their worst enemy.”

Basketball isn’t perfect, nor is streetball. While several hoopers never make it to the NBA, many get discouraged and leave the sport as a whole. Streetball has a place for everyone; it doesn’t discriminate. Taking in everyone’s imperfections, it’s a place where hoopers can play basketball at the highest level. Streetball is so back, and Ballislife is at the center of it.Β
