Harry Kane spared Bayern Munich blushes as he scored an injury-time winner at third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round.
Kane nodded home at the death to seal a 3-2 win after his side had earlier blown a two-goal lead and he had missed a penalty.
The England striker did score from the spot early on before Michael Olise doubled Bayern’s lead after the break, but Fatih Kaya scored twice inside six minutes for the 3. Liga outfit to raise the prospect of a major shock.
Kane then missed his first competitive penalty since the 2022 World Cup when he was denied by heroic Wiesbaden goalkeeper Florian Stritzel, but he had he final word when he nodded home in the third minute of stoppage-time.
“Crazy game … We had some big, big chances to put the game away, but credit to them, they stuck at it,” Kane told broadcaster Sky Sport. “We know we’re not the perfect team yet. We know we’ve got stuff to work on and tonight shows that.”
Bayern boss Vincent Kompany meant business by naming his powerhouse front three of Kane, Luis Díaz and Olise in his starting XI.
They were quickly on to the attack and were awarded a 16th-minute penalty when Sacha Boey was brought down in the area.
Kane was deadly from the spot, rolling his effort into the bottom corner for his 30th-consecutive successful penalty conversion.
The visitors had plenty of chances to increase their lead, but came up against a goalkeeper who was proving to be a one-man wall.
Stritzel saved excellently from Diaz, who also had a shot from close range blocked and then clawed away Raphael Guerreiro’s effort.
Bayern finally got their second, five minutes after the restart.
Olise swept home at the far post after 17-year-old Lennart Karl burst into the box with a surging run and that seemed enough.
Diaz was desperate to break his duck for his new club and was denied again by Stritzel when he went through on goal before blazing over from close range.
And those misses proved costly as Wiesbaden turned the tie around with two goals in six minutes.
Kaya got his first in the 66th minute when he slid home at the far post from Niklas May’s excellent cross.
They were level soon after and it was a real route-one goal as Moritz Flotho flicked on a long ball which Kaya raced on to and slammed home.
Bayern responded well and looked set to go ahead when they were awarded another penalty when Kane was chopped down after Stritzel denied Serge Gnabry.
But the home goalkeeper’s super-human effort continued as he kept out Kane’s spot-kick and then also denied the England striker from the rebound as Wiesbaden dreamed of a famous result.
However, with extra time looming, Kane rose highest from Josip Stanisic’s cross to make it six goals from three competitive games this season.
