Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain – BCCI source
There were some doubts over the participation of Suryakumar Yadav in the Asia Cup 2025 because of his recent surgery. He underwent surgery for a lower-right abdomen hernia in Munich, Germany, in June after his stint in IPL and Mumbai T20 League.
The India T20I skipper then travelled to the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru for his rehab and has now received a clean chit from the medical team to take part in the marquee tournament.
“He has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup. He was at the COE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told the Indian Express.
There were some reports that claimed Shubman Gill could lead India in the Asia Cup 2025 if Suryakumar Yadav were unfit, but those reports have now been shot down.
Is Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I form a concern?
Former World No.1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav looked in exceptional form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for the five-time champions.
He showcased unreal consistency and scored 25-plus in all the matches. Suryakumar ended the season with 717 runs at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91.
However, his latest T20I numbers have not been very good. He last scored a fifty against Bangladesh on October 12, 2024, and since then, he has been on a lean patch of 9 consecutive matches.
