Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake isn’t holding back when it comes to Shawn Michaels and the infamous Rockers split that rocked WWE in the early ’90s.
During a conversation on Going Ringside, Beefcake flat-out accused Michaels of backstabbing his longtime tag team partner, Marty Jannetty — and doing it with Vince McMahon’s blessing. Beefcake said the issue wasn’t about fairness — it was pure sabotage.
“It’s not whether I think he got a fair shake or not. He got murdered. Shawn Michaels and Vince plotted and planned a whole… schemed out all this stuff. They were part—Marty was partners with him for years. For Shawn to do this behind Marty’s back, not tell him a single word about what was going to happen… basically Marty was left hanging, no nothing. It was a horrible travesty.”
The WWE legend then made it clear how serious the betrayal was in the eyes of the wrestling locker room:
“The worst possible thing that the boys in our business never do is stab a guy in the back, especially a guy who’s been your partner for years. And that’s what Shawn did. I to this day, I still think he’s poss for doing that.”
When the Montreal Screwjob came up — another infamous moment where Michaels played a central role — Beefcake didn’t hesitate to connect the dots:
“Not at all. It’s—you know, once a sneak, always a sneak. He was sneaky doing that to Marty and then he’s sneaky doing stuff with Bret. Only thing he cared about was getting ahead. Not a team player, not a guy that helps with other guys and works together for everybody’s benefit. The only thing he cared about was getting ahead.”
Brutus Beefcake clearly hasn’t let go of what went down behind the curtain. Decades later, his words carry weight for fans who still argue over who was right, who was wrong, and who got left behind when the Rockers broke up.
