LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball coach Bill Self mentioned Sunday that, largely, his team has been fortunate this season from a health standpoint.
The No. 17 Jayhawks (9-3) haven’t had to traverse many injury situations through non-conference play. Amid a challenging slate of games, the team has been competitive and picked up some key wins — like those against now-No. 23 Tennessee and rival Missouri at neutral sites, and NC State in overtime on the road. So, Self likes where they’re at.

But, Self allowed, he would like it a lot more if his best player was out there competing at 100% on a regular basis. That would be freshman guard Darryn Peterson, who’s dealt with injury issues that have seen him miss eight of KU’s games so far this season. And while Self hopes to reach that point very soon — and would love to see Peterson play Monday at home against Davidson (8-3) — he didn’t go further than saying they’d wait to see how Peterson did Sunday and then check how Peterson’s feeling.

“I think he feels better every day,” Self told reporters about Peterson. “He’s moving better. You see him at 70%, and you say, ‘God, he looks pretty good.’ Until you see him at 75, until you see him at 80, until you see him at 85. And he’s not perfect by any stretch yet, but he’s gaining on it every day.”
Davidson’s upcoming trip to Allen Fieldhouse did lead to Self revisiting a couple of memories from his past at KU, one better than the other. The Jayhawks beat the Wildcats in 2008 during the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, on the way to Self’s first national title at KU. The Jayhawks also lost to the Wildcats in 2011 during the regular season in Kansas City, Missouri.

Looking ahead to this matchup, Self hopes his team won’t let Davidson get as comfortable as it did in that Kansas City game. Heading into a break, with Kansas not playing another game after it until the Big 12 Conference opener Jan. 3 on the road at UCF, he thinks a 10-3 record sounds a lot better than 9-4. So, he places a lot of importance on this contest.
Kansas is currently on a three-game winning streak, with a recent win at home against Towson adding on to those two recent victories against Missouri and NC State. Peterson played against Missouri and NC State before missing the Towson matchup with the same quad cramping that led to him exiting the NC State game late. KU’s been able to manage Peterson’s absence of late in part because of how well senior guard Melvin Council Jr. has been playing, and the Jayhawks will need him Monday regardless of if Peterson plays.
“I think any time you have a break in games, you want the last one to be a good taste in your mouth so you don’t have that negative taste for two-straight weeks, or whatever,” Self said. “And turkey and ham and your Christmas fixings will taste a little bit better if we’re successful tomorrow.”
