TYR Summer Championships, Day Three Finals: Ben Armbruster Tops Caeleb Dressel in 50 Fly; Michael Hochwalt Impresses in 400 IM
The efforts of Brooks Curry and Caeleb Dressel highlighted the Day Three morning session of the TYR Pro Championships in Irvine, California. The question: Can they be faster at night? Curry (100 freestyle) and Dressel (50 butterfly) will chase qualification to the Pan Pacific Championships during Thursday night’s finals at the William Woollett Aquatic Center.
Curry needs to be faster than 47.58 to secure a spot in the 100 freestyle while Dressel needs to better 23.21 in the 50 butterfly. Both marks are within reach for the Americans. A two-time Olympian, Curry owns a personal best of 47.90. As for Dressel, he’s the American-record holder in the 50 butterfly at 22.35.
In addition to finals in the 100 freestyle and 50 fly, championship races will be held in the 400 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Women’s 100 Freestyle
A three-way battle in the opening final of the night went to Australia’s Jaimie De Lutiis, as she managed to clip Sandpipers’ Bella Sims and Carmel’s Alex Shackell. De Lutiis, the runnerup in the 50 freestyle earlier in the meet, stopped the clock in 54.36, which was slightly quicker than the 54.45 of Sims. De Lutiis had the lead at the turn and didn’t yield down the final length of the pool.
Shackell, the winner of the 100 butterfly on Wednesday night, finished third in 54.53.

Armbruster went 23.10 in the prelims, so his performance wasn’t unsurprising, and it backed up a victory in the 100 fly on Wednesday night. In the longer distance, Armbruster went 50.91.
Finishing second in 23.28 was Caeleb Dressel, who was contending for a spot to next year’s Pan Pacific Championships. Matching his time from the morning, Dressel finished .07 shy of the 23.21 by Michael Andrew earlier this year, a scenario which will leave Andrew on the Pan Pacs squad for 2026. Dressel was followed in third place by Aiden Hayes, who went 23.57.
