The golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on every shot. And when you look at the totality of performance, speed, flight and spin, there’s often more separation between golf balls than there is between drivers, irons or wedges.
For 2025, we tested 44 models at three swing speeds with drivers and 7-irons, plus a 35-yard wedge test where the biggest differences between balls tend to appear. Every ball was purchased at retail and tested on a robot to keep results unbiased.
If you’re trying to figure out which TaylorMade ball is right for your game, here’s the data-driven breakdown of the four TaylorMade golf balls we tested this year.
TaylorMade TP5
TP5 makes the clearest case in the TaylorMade lineup for golfers who prioritize greenside performance. In the 35-yard wedge test, TP5 produced the highest spin of any ball in the full test pool and it paired that spin with mid launch around the greens, a rare short-game profile.
TP5 also checks the “height” box for players who prefer a higher window. At mid swing speed, it’s listed among the highest-flying balls in driver testing.
Across all three swing speeds, TP5 ranked below average for driver distance. Its performance emphasis is control and spin rather than raw length.
Play TP5 if
- You fit your ball from the green back and want elite 35-yard wedge spin.
- You prefer a higher-flight window off the driver at mid/low speeds.
Skip TP5 if
- Your main goal is to minimize driver spin as much as possible.
- You prefer a flatter, more penetrating flight.
TaylorMade TP5x
TP5x occupies a distinct performance lane within the TaylorMade lineup. In the 2025 test, it consistently produced a higher flight window across multiple swing speeds while delivering comparatively lower driver spin than many other urethane tour balls.
It does a little better in the driver distance category than the TP5 but not much.
Iron data supports its high-flight tendencies, making TP5x a fit for players who benefit from added height without relying on excessive spin.
Play TP5x if
- You want a lower driver spin tendency while staying in a premium construction.
- You like a higher flight window off the driver and into irons.
Skip TP5x if
- You want maximum greenside spin in the TaylorMade golf ball lineup (TP5 is the stronger short-game spin ball).
TaylorMade Tour Response

Tour Response is the TaylorMade model most consistently positioned in the 2025 findings as a low-spin option at playable swing speeds. In the mid swing speed recommendations, it’s listed as the low-spin pick. It’s also one of the lowest spinning off the tee for mid swing speeds.
The combination of reduced driver spin at mid and low speeds suits golfers who want to manage curvature and keep tee shots from ballooning or overcurving.
Play Tour Response if
- You want a TaylorMade ball that trends low spin off the driver at mid and low speeds.
- You want a softer-leaning option
- You prefer a firmer, faster feedback profile.
- Greenside spin is your top priority (bottom half of the test for wedge spin)
TaylorMade Speed Soft

Speed Soft earned runner-up honors for Best Soft Feel in the 2025 MyGolfSpy Golf Ball Test.
Built with a soft ionomer construction, Speed Soft prioritizes feel over spin. In the 35-yard wedge test, it sat near the lower end of the spin table, consistent with the broader finding that ionomer balls can’t match urethane’s greenside control. It was also among the highest-launching balls on short wedge shots.
Speed Soft isn’t among the longest balls overall but at lower swing speeds, it maintains competitive carry through a higher flight window.
Play Speed Soft if
- Soft feel is your top priority.
- You prefer higher launch on short shots.
Skip Speed Soft if
- You want urethane-level greenside control.
