The Big 12 Conference has issued a public reprimand of the University of Colorado and a $50,000 fine for inappropriate chants directed towards members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the Buffaloes’ game against the BYU Cougars at Folsom Field last Saturday.
“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference,” wrote Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark in a press release issued to media members Tuesday afternoon. “While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday’s game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies.”

As Yormark mentioned, CU issued a formal apology for the inappropriate chants from some fans last Saturday.
“The University of Colorado Boulder strongly condemns the use of expletives and religious slurs by individuals in the stands during the recent football game against BYU,” wrote a university spokesperson on a Twitter/X thread posted on CU’s account. “Such behavior is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the values of respect, inclusion and integrity we expect of our campus community.”
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders also issued an apology on behalf of the university during his weekly press conference on Tuesday morning.
“On behalf of CU and our athletic department, we would like to apologize to our opponent from a week ago for whatever derogatory statements were made by our fans,” Sanders said. “That’s not indicative of who we are.”

Sanders and the Buffaloes now turn their attention to their game against the TCU Horned Frogs this weekend, while the 23rd-ranked Cougars prepare to play West Virginia in Provo.
