Blair Davenport wasn’t able to achieve much success on the WWE main roster and was eventually released earlier this year. Following her exit, Davenport has now explained why things fell apart for her in WWE.
While speaking on That Sweet Pop, Blair Davenport opened up about her time in WWE and why things started to fall apart after she was drafted to Friday Night SmackDown.
Davenport said that sometimes, creative had a plan, but other times it felt like they didn’t. At first, it looked like she was getting a good push, but once she moved to SmackDown, things became uncertain. Since SmackDown is only two hours compared to Raw’s three, there were fewer women’s matches and less time for her to shine.
“Sometimes it looks like they have an obvious plan in creative — sometimes they don’t. And I know at times it looked like I was being pushed in a good direction. But when you get called up, it’s like, hey, it’s great being up here, but do you actually know what you want to do with me?
Well, that’s basically what happened. And this isn’t meant to sound bitter, because I’m genuinely happy for all my friends — it’s just a reflection of my experience. Kiana James and Lyra Valkyria went to Raw, and I was the only girl going to SmackDown. And SmackDown, you’re lucky if you get two women’s matches on the show anyway, because it’s only two hours compared to Raw’s three. That extra hour means a lot more screen time.”
While Kiana James and Lyra Valkyria went to Raw, with Lyra quickly getting a spot in the Queen of the Ring tournament, Davenport’s situation was different. WWE had some ideas for her at first, but two weeks later the head writer was replaced, and all her early creative talks disappeared.
The new writer had just been promoted and didn’t push for her much, likely because she was still new in the role. Davenport said she understood, since she also didn’t want to step on toes when she first joined SmackDown.
“So Lyra immediately gets the Queen of the Ring tournament, which was awesome for her. They had some ideas for me, but then two weeks after I got moved to SmackDown, the head writer got switched. All of my initial conversations basically disappeared. The writer I ended up with had just been promoted, so I think she was hesitant to really push for me since she was still new herself. She just went with the flow instead of saying, ‘Hey, why don’t we do something with Bea here?’ And I get it — no disrespect. I felt the same way. I wasn’t about to step on toes when I first arrived; I just wanted to do what I was told.”
Davenport admitted there were times when she felt lost, unsure what WWE planned for her. There were talks about teaming with Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre as part of the Unholy Union, since they were already working matches together against Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, and Naomi. There were even ideas about her moving to Raw or Isla and Alba coming to SmackDown, but nothing was ever confirmed.
“There were definitely times when I felt lost, not knowing what was going on. There were talks about maybe tagging with Isla and Alba and becoming a trios team in the Unholy Union, because we were doing triple threats against Bianca, Jade, and Naomi. They floated ideas like, ‘Maybe you’ll move to Raw,’ or, ‘Maybe they’ll come to SmackDown.’ Those were real conversations, but nothing concrete.”
Since her WWE departure, Davenport made her way back to STARDOM and is now clearly having a great time there. Nonetheless, we’ll have to see how things pan out for Davenport in the end, as some fans feel she deserves to go back to WWE and have a proper run there.
