Breaking down UVA men’s basketball summer practice clips

by

We are in the midst of summer, a time when a writer must dig deep and channel their creativity to produce a piece for their audience not only to read but also to enjoy.

Luckily, football is just around the corner, and the Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball social media team is firing on all cylinders this offseason, posting video clips from practices and conducting player spotlights/player introductions in the form of pictures and clips. My favorite content so far has been the videos of Coach Odom briefly discussing his roster, one player at a time, most recently being the new addition of Thijs De Ridder.

The ladies and gentlemen who are responsible for generating ideas and creating content for the basketball team deserve a huge thank you. They have completely taken advantage of a new house with all new faces on this roster and coaching staff.

If the clips, videos, and interviews weren’t enough for you, they also have an all-access behind-the-scenes look at the new-look Virginia Cavaliers called Proving Grounds, coming out soon. Hats off to the media team.

As for today’s breakdown, we take a look at yesterday’s clip posted from practice. To the naked eye, this looks like a thunderous dunk from Kansas State transfer Ugonna Onyenso. In a way, that untrained eye is right, but I challenge you to take a closer look here and see how this occurred.

First, we have Jacari White refusing a screen from Onyenso, a move that beats freshman point guard Chance Mallory. Then we have Carter Lang falling for a pump fake pass towards the left wing, exposing the paint. Then we see transfer Dallin Hall late on the help, allowing Onyenso to cram a two-handed dunk home.

Now, this defensive blunder is nothing to write home about. If anything, this video serves as a reminder that the ‘Hoos have some real athletes on their roster and will be a force to be reckoned with on offense.
