Brent Venables is using his head coaching powers to make sure that one underrated player gets on the field more during 2025 originally appeared on A to Z Sports.
The Oklahoma Sooners are expecting a lot of their younger players to take a massive leap in 2025 from 2024, and that’s largely because of the injuries they had last season, and players being forced to play.

There aren’t many teams, if any, that had as crucial and as many injuries as the Sooners did last season. At one point, they had all five of their best wide receivers out at the same time, while also having just a few total games with the same starting unit on the offensive line.
And on the defensive side, while they weren’t bad there, they also dealt with a ton of injuries. Guys like Kendal Dolby missed the entire season, and that really affected the Sooners’ defense, even if it didn’t look like it. But those injuries that they sustained, whether it be guys missing one week or the whole season, allowed some of the young guys to get some reps and experience. And while they messed up in the moment, it really helped their development.

Sooners’ young stud Reggie Powers is getting praise from Brent Venables
The Oklahoma Sooners have some very, very good young defenders on their roster that just need a chance to get on the field to prove it. We have heard about so many of them throughout fall camp practices, with one of them being defensive back Reggie Powers, who has been all over the place.

In fact, head coach Brent Venables is telling other coaches that he needs to be on the field even more.
“I love Reggie Powers. His passion and energy, his intensity, his playmaking. I’ve told the coaches: Find a way to get this dude on the field,” Venables told the media on site during a post-practice scrum.

The Sooners will, at some point, need some of their young guys to come in and play some pretty big roles. They think that Powers is one of the guys who can do that. Venables thinks that Powers should be a guy who does that, but needs to be on the field even more.

If you’re Powers, too, you have to love hearing that. There is no better feeling than the head coach letting everyone know that you should be playing more. So, expect to see more of Reggie Powers in 2025 than we saw in 2024.
