Jose Quintana will miss the rest of the regular season after the Brewers placed the left-hander on the injured list with a left calf strain on Wednesday, retroactive to Sept. 15. Right-hander Nick Mears was reinstated from the 15-day IL.
Quintana was hit on the lower leg by a comebacker in the fourth inning in his start Sunday against the Cardinals but remained in the game after being checked out. On the final out of the inning, Quintana hustled to cover first as first baseman Jake Bauers scrambled after a ball that he didn’t field cleanly. Bauers recovered and fired the ball to Quintana, who beat José Fermín to the bag.
Quintana, who will still be eligible for the postseason, appeared to be limping slightly as he headed to the dugout and was replaced by Aaron Ashby at the start of the fifth.
The 36-year-old was 11-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 24 starts for the Brewers.
