According to the musical My Fair Lady, the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. But when Biloxi’s Garrett Spain traversed the plane from third base to home in Friday night’s game, the plane could not contain Garrett Spain.
In the top of the ninth, with Spain on third, Brewers No. 4 prospect Cooper Pratt skied a fly ball to right field. Montgomery’s Colton Ledbetter made the catch and fired to home as Spain barreled down the third-base line. The ball reached catcher Tatem Levins with Spain still several strides away, seemingly set to run into an out. The next few moments resembled a Flamenco as Spain danced behind the plate with Levins in pursuit, glove outstretched. With a juke move that would make many an NFL running back proud, Spain broke back toward the plate, sending Levins into a pirouette.
In near synchronization, the pair dove toward home. It was Spain who broke the plane, reaching the plate before Levins could apply the tag.
In the scorebook, it looks like a routine sacrifice fly, but as Spain could attest, it was anything but.
