LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier enters the 2025 college football season with the sport’s eyes on him as a serious Heisman Trophy candidate.

However, Nussmeier suffered an injury earlier in the week that had LSU fans holding their breath, especially after rumors swirled that he was “carried off the field.”
Those rumors were shut down, and it was revealed he dealt with “normal football stuff” and sat out the rest of the day, per the guidance of head coach Brian Kelly.
Brian Kelly’s Latest Garrett Nussmeier Update
On Friday, Kelly offered another update on the status of his star quarterback, per Glen West of 247Sports.

“Tomorrow he’ll be out in most likely a practice situation,” Kelly said. “On a scale of 1-10, it’s like a 1.5.”
Kelly also said Nussmeier has patellar tendinitis in his knee.
That’s a promising sign for Nussmeier and the entire LSU team, although the LSU football account raised eyebrows with a post Friday.
Before the update from Kelly, the X account posted a photo of Nussmeier and backup Michael Van Buren with the caption that read “The preparation continues on Friday in Baton Rouge.”

While fans questioned the photo and the timing, Kelly’s update on Nussmeier should provide a sigh of relief.
Garrett Nussmeier’s Heisman Expectations

Nussmeier has been in the Heisman Trophy spotlight all offseason long.
According to FanDuel’s latest Heisman odds, he is tied for second with Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik at +900 and only behind Texas Longhorns QB Arch Manning, who is at +700.
In 2024, Nussmeier took over as the full-time starter after Jayden Daniels’ Heisman-winning campaign the year prior.

And, Nussmeier did nothing but deliver. He threw for 3,739 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as LSU finished with a 9-4 record and a 5-3 mark in SEC play. The Tigers’ season ended with a 44-31 win over the Baylor Bears in the Texas Bowl.
If Nussmeier is healthy, the sky is the limit for both himself and the team, but if he suffers any sort of injury, it could be a long season in Baton Rouge.
For now, the major injury has been avoided, and LSU faces Clemson on the road on Aug. 30 in the opener.
