TYR Summer Championships, Day Three Prelims: Brooks Curry Leads Field in 100 Freestyle
Each of the first two days of the TYR Summer Championships has featured an intriguing storyline. While Van Mathias stunned with a win in the 50-meter breaststroke on the opening night of the meet, Aaron Shackell delivered a stellar performance in the 400 freestyle on the second night of action. With their performances, Mathias and Shackell should land on the American squad that will compete at next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships.
What will Day Three hold?
The third session of prelims at the William Woollett Aquatic Center will include women’s and men’s heats of the 100 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Hunter Armstrong is entered in the 100 backstroke while Justina Kozan will contest the 400 individual medley after winning the 200 IM earlier in the meet.

Men’s 100 Freestyle
Olympian Brooks Curry comfortably claimed the top seed for the final of the 100 freestyle, as he won the second of three heats in 48.35. Curry has been sub-48 this year and will need a time faster than 47.58 to grab an invitation to the Pan Pacific Champs. He was joined under 49 seconds in prelims by Jerry Fox, who qualified second-fastest in a time of 48.94.
Hunter Armstrong opted to scratch the event and focus on the 100 backstroke, which will be held later in the session. Armstrong has a strong chance to qualify for Pan Pacs in the 100 back.
